Photo Essay: Austin, Texas

I've been visiting Austin since moving there in 1989 to attend graduate school. My daughter and son were born there in the early 90s. One of my greatest friends lives there, and together we have undertaken some exceptional photographic adventures.  One adventure was to climb a 40 story building that was under construction and so new that it was a hollow concrete shell with no exterior walls.  Sometime after midnight, I pulled up the bottom of the 20 foot tall chain link fence around the development site and scooted my camera bag under.  Then my friend and I scrunched underneath, and quickly hid away as best as we could as we slithered along the walls and found our way to the interior of the building. We climbed a staircase in the middle of the building which itself had no surrounding walls.  Austin was just beginning its evolution from the sensible and small capital city it was in the 90s to what it seems like now, a small European capital city.

We have gone out on many miles-long walks across Austin, back when there was no issue hiking the hike-and-bike trail at all hours, usually at night. We've done light painting at night of the giant palmetto palms at Palmetto State Park. We've seen the milky way blazing away in full command of the night sky in South Llano River State Park. We've happened upon the grand gay pride parade as we took a late afternoon walk across downtown. We've talked our way onto rooftops.  We've gone in search of fields of blue bells.  I've shot many astonishingly beautiful figures in Austin, and even in my friend's condo.
